El Tri needed to beat the Chileans to remain in contention for a World Cup berth, however, they were beaten by the narrowest of margins...

Peru 1-0 Bolivia

Peru ended their World Cup qualifying campaign with an encouraging 1-0 victory over Bolivia in Lima but still finished bottom of the group, behind the Bolivians.

The Peruvians dominated great deal of the match and won courtesy of a second-half strike from Johan Javier Fano.

Veteran Nolberto Solano almost gave Peru the lead in the 38th minute but his well executed free-kick flashed inches wide. It was the closest Peru came to scoring in the entire first half.

One minute later Bolivia received a major blow when Rosauro Rivero was sent off. The midfielder received his second bookable offence.

After the break Peru tried to take advantage of their numerical advantage and they went ahead in the 53rd minute when Fano beat Carlos Erwin Farias with a low shot after meeting a good ball from Luis Ramirez.

However, one minute after his goal Fano was dismissed for punching an opponent, an action that was detected by linesman Luis Sanchez.

The sending off seemed to inspire Bolivia as they went looking for a draw. They dominated their opponents and came very close to scoring.

Werder Bremen striker Marcelo Moreno came closest to scoring towards the end of the game, with a powerful shot that was brilliantly saved by Peru goalkeeper Leao Butron.

Despite the win, Peru finished in last place of the ten-team group with 13 points, two points behind of Bolivia, with 15 points.

Chile 1-0 Ecuador

Chile put an end to Ecuador's World Cup hopes with a tight 1-0 victory at the Monumental stadium of Santiago.

The only goal of the match was converted by Humberto Suazo in the second half. It was Suazo's tenth goal of the qualifiers, making him the highest scorer of the competition.

Ecuador, who needed to claim all three points to remain with chances of qualifying for the World Cup, played a conservative game as they tried to break Chile on the break.

The Ecuadorians, who were beaten 2-1 by Uruguay on Saturday, played the ball around nicely, but they lacked ideas when it came to moving to the attacking third.

Chile, who had already qualified for the World Cup after defeating Colombia on Saturday, dominated their opponents but didn't translate this into goal scoring opportunities.

The closest scoring chance fell to Edison Mendez of Ecuador, but the Liga de Quito midfielder had his fine effort well saved.

In the second period Chile played the better football and it seemed that at any moment they would take the lead.

In the 52nd minute Suazo met an Arturo Vidal cross in the area with a clinical finish to put Marcelo Bielsa's side ahead.

The goal seemed to awaken a desperate Ecuador that went looking for an equaliser, however, they lacked the necessary quality to penetrate the solid Chile defence.

But it was still Chile who looked the more dangerous side when moving forward. La Roja missed several opportunities to put the result out of Ecuador's reach.

Seven minutes before full-time Paraguayan referee Carlos Torres ejected Segundo Castillo for a violent tackle on Chilean defender Ismael Fuentes.

Ecuador completely lost the plot, as they knew that their World Cup aspirations had already come to an end.

Had Ecuador beaten Chile they would have finished in fifth-place and would have gone on to meet Costa Rica, the fourth-placed team from the CONCACAF region, over a two-legged playoff.

Uruguay lost 1-0 to Argentina in Montevideo, but still progressed to the playoff for the third consecutive year.

Chile finished their World Cup qualifying campaign with 33 points. Ecuador finished with only 23 points.

Colombia shocked Paraguay at the Defensores del Chaco stadium in Asuncion with what ended up being a comfortable 2-0 victory.

The already eliminated Colombians won the game with goals from Adrian Ramos and Hugo Rodallega in the second half.

Brazil, who drew 0-0 with Venezuela, finished as the group winners with 34 points.

Chile and Paraguay accumulated 33 points, but the Chileans finished in second-place due to their superior goal difference. Both teams qualified for South Africa.

Ramos opened the scoring for Colombia in the 62nd minute with a precise crossed shot, after finding space from a Pablo Armero cross.

In the 80th minute Rodallega doubled Colombia´s advantage when he fired the ball home from outside of the area after a swift break.

Paraguay were a shadow of the side that beat Venezuela on Saturday. They lacked determination in their game and only created three decent scoring chances throughout the entire encounter.

Their first was a clear-cut chance that was presented to Salvador Cabanas, but the Club America striker shot wide. He then missed another good opportunity.

In the 57th minute, a header from Osvaldo Martinez hit the right post of the goal defended by David Ospina.

With the loss Paraguay missed out on a great chance to finish the World Cup qualifiers in first-place. They had to settle for third-place at the end.

Colombia were already eliminated from the World Cup, after falling to Chile in a must-win game on the weekend.
