Giuseppe Rossi hit a hat-trick in a match against the Empoli youth side on Sunday evening as Italy coach Marcello Lippi tested a number of different options, according to La Repubblica.

The match ended 6-0 in favour of the world champions, with the Villarreal striker showing plenty of spark. Meanwhile, Alberto Gilardino, who scored Italy's 90th minute equaliser against Ireland, notched a brace and Fabio Quagliarella was also on target.

The Azzurri boss will rest a number of his key players for the match against Cyprus on Wednesday, as qualification to the World Cup has already been assured.

He tried some new tactics against the Empoli youngsters, starting with a 3-4-3 formation that had Fabio Cannavaro, Salvatore Bocchetti and Alessandro Gamberini at the back.

The midfield consisted of Inter starlet Davide Santon, Gennaro Gattuso, Gaetano D'Agostino and Simone Pepe. Meanwhile, Rossi, Gilardino and Quagliarella made a trident attack.

In the second half of the match, Santon was moved to his usual full-back position, while Rossi and Quagliarella had more withdrawn roles behind Gilardino in a 4-3-3 setup.

The Azzurri kick-off against Cyprus in Parma at 21:00 CET on Wednesday.
