Sweden Legend Henrik Larsson Announces International Retirement
The veteran striker will make way for his younger colleagues after Wednesday...
Henrik Larsson has made it clear that he'll quit the Swedish national team after the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Albania on Wednesday, even if the Swedes qualify for next summer's finals.
The striker became Sweden's oldest ever outfield player in his side's 1-0 loss against Denmark last Saturday, aged 38 years and 20 days.
Sweden dropped to third spot in the table following the defeat, leaving qualification for South Africa something of a pipe dream. To reach the play-offs, Sweden must win and hope Portugal slip up against winless Malta.
"It's probably over now. I feel that there will be no World Cup for me, even if we do qualify," the striker told a press conference. "I'm 38-years-old now and I no longer have the motivation to play for Sweden after the match against Albania. It's time to make way for other attackers.
"It isn't a very tough decision for me. I will start focussing on a coaching career. I have played for several big teams in the past and played in all kinds of formations, so I have plenty of knowledge of the game."
Larsson previously retired from the international game in 2002 only to make a comeback a couple of years later. But this time his decision appears to be a permanent one.
The Sweden captain has scored 37 goals in 106 internationals. Larsson will end the season with hometown team Helsingborg and is widely expected to hang up his boots when the domestic campaign concludes on November 1.
