Alberto Gilardino: Amauri Will Not Answer Italy’s Problems, I Will

The Fiorentina hitman believes he has the solution to end Italy's goal drought...

Italy striker Alberto Gilardino claims he will be the player to solve the Azzurri's goal scoring problems, not Nazionale hopeful Amauri.

Marcello Lippi's players have not scored a goal since their 3-1 Confederations Cup win against the USA in June. They beat Georgia 2-0 on Saturday thanks to own goals by Kakhaber Kaladze, leading to calls for Amauri, who is not yet officially an Italian citizen, to be included in future squads.

'Gila' who could start on Wednesday against Bulgaria, believes he can put an end to the recent drought, deflecting from the Amauri debate.

"Amauri? We have never spoken about him. One player is not the solution to our problems," Gilardino told the press.

"He is a formidable and strong player, but what counts is the group we have here and that we got three points against Georgia. The federation and Italy will decide about Amauri.

"I don't feel like I need anything to be the first choice Italy striker. Maybe just a goal in the decisive matches. I want to get to Paolo Rossi's 20 goal tally."
