Davide Santon May Have To Leave Inter To Keep Italy Place - Fabio Cannavaro
Sep 3, 2009 4:47:37 PM
The veteran has suggested his fellow defender not take a spot on the bench for an extended period of time...
Inter starlet Davide Santon burst onto the scene just last January, earning great acclaim as he earned a spot in coach Jose Mourinho's line-up and on Italy's Confederations Cup roster. However, despite once again being recalled to the Azzurri, Santon seems to have lost his place in the starting XI at Inter due to the arrival of Lucio, who has pushed Cristian Chivu out to the left-back position.
Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro has urged the promising full-back to find playing time, so he can join the team for the World Cup in South Africa next summer.
"Players like [Mario] Balotelli and Santon must play, not just train. Unfortunately, during certain stages of a season you prefer to rely on players of experience," he was quoted as saying La Stampa at a press conference.
"He should still play. It doesn't matter where, or he will miss the World Cup."
Italy tactician Marcello Lippi has previously described the 18-year-old as someone who is "predestined" and reminds him of Milan legend Paolo Maldini.
