Goal.com is in Rustenburg for today’s match between South Africa and New Zealand in the Confederations Cup. It is a 'do or die' encounter for Bafana, but for some fans in the stadium, Sibaya has stolen the show.
The Rubin Kaza defensive midfielder has been a pillar of
strength in the middle of the park for Bafana on countless occasions, with his
coaches always counting on him to be a calm influence and a leader to the other
Playing in Joel Santana’s starting eleven, Sibaya won his 50th
cap for Bafana, and at half time Goal.com was among the fans to find out what
they thought about the tough midfielder’s accomplishment.
“He is an inspiration to the fans, and he fights for every
ball. He deserves to reach 100 caps one day and maybe he should be our captain
after Aaron [Mokoena] retires. It is a pity he plays in Russia, he should be
playing in one of the better European leagues. Well done Macbeth,” said
24-year-old cashier Linda.
“Wow 50 caps is a big milestone, but you could see from the
start that a player like him would do great things. He works hard and is so
serious about his time with the national team. He is a leader within the squad
and I’m sure the players are proud of him,” said John from Johannesburg.
Alexan from Rustenburg had this to say about Sibaya’s
achievement, “It is excellent, to be honest I thought he had more, but that
just goes to show how long he has been at this game for Bafana. South Africa
need more players like him in the squad.”
Out of the active players that are still eligible to play
for South Africa, only Benni McCarthy, Sibusiso Zuma and captain Aaron Mokoena
have more caps than Sibaya.
