thumbnail Hello,

Rustenburg is going crazy for Spain's Anfield contingent...

Less than two hours before the 2009 Confederations Cup match between Spain and New Zealand kicks off at the South African city of Rustenburg, the fans are arriving.

Those who are not neutral are supporting Spain and Liverpool, though not necessarily in that order.

Sandy had brought his brother, nephew and daughter on the 150 minute drive north from Johannesburg.

All are keen Liverpool fans and all are desperate to see their heroes in action.

“Like half the Spanish team plays for Liverpool,” laughed Sandy as he stood outside the 40,000 capacity stadium.

“We’ve always supported Liverpool. My nephew likes Torres but I love Alonso.”

Like most fans milling around the arena, Sandy was in doubt as to what the result is going to be.

“We’re playing New Zealand! It will be 4-0.”

Another group had made the much longer trip from Durban.

“Wouldn’t miss it,” said Tami. “We’re supporting Spain because we love Liverpool.”
