After guiding Barcelona to an illustrious treble, Lionel Messi’s next big mission is to help Argentina qualify for the World Cup and eventually lift the famous gold statue in South Africa in a little over 13 months’ time.

The dazzling forward has already had to put an end to his celebrations with his club team-mates in Catalunya, as he made the long journey back to South America to prepare for his country’s upcoming series of World Cup qualifiers, against Colombia this Saturday and Ecuador four days later.

Diego Maradona’s side have yet to book their ticket to the finals in South Africa, but Messi is already confident of a successful campaign, even though he admitted that it will not be easy.

“Our goal is to be the champions. That’s how I see it because with the spectacular players that we have, if we are prepared we can win the World Cup again. It is our ultimate dream,” he told Ole upon arriving at the airport in Buenos Aires.

“I am feeling well psychologically. I desire to play more with Argentina but it’s complicated. At Barcelona, I have the entire season to prove myself and if I do not play well, I can atone for it straight away.

“But in the Seleccion, you only play every two months and that’s it. It’s very difficult.”

‘El Mesias’ then went on to relive Barca’s triumphant season, especially last week’s Champions League victory over Manchester United and over his personal rival, Cristiano Ronaldo.

“The final was much more important than the duel between me and Cristiano, because both teams had a lot at stake,” he explained.

“Everything that we have lived through in these past few days has been a dream. I don’t think we are really aware yet of what we have achieved.”

Argentina are currently occupying the fourth and final automatic World Cup qualification spot, two points ahead of Uruguay in fifth.
