The winger returned to Selhurst Park after a difficult time at Manchester United and the former Tottenham man hopes to enjoy a similar rejuvenation under the manager
Andros Townsend has revealed that Alan Pardew played a major role in convincing him to move to Crystal Palace, following his impressive work with Wilfried Zaha.
Townsend completed a £13 million move to the club from Newcastle United earlier this summer, following the Magpies’ relegation to the Championship.
The former Tottenham winger will subsequently compete with Zaha for a spot in Pardew’s first-team, with the latter having rejoined the club after a nightmare spell at Manchester United in 2015.
Zaha was Sir Alex Ferguson’s final signing as United boss, but the winger did not play under the legendary Scot and instead failed to impress new manager David Moyes. Instead, he twice returned to the Eagles on loan either side of a spell at Cardiff City, before making his comeback at Selhurst Park permanent.
Townsend, speaking at a preview of the FIFA 17 Demo at the Oxford Street Adidas Store, admits that the 23-year-old’s confidence was shattered following his disappointing spell at Old Trafford, but was inspired by Pardew’s work to rebuild the player, who scored five goals and provided seven assists last season.
"I made no secret before that he was another massive reason I joined the club,” Townsend told Goal. “I think you've seen what he did with the likes of Yannick Bolasie and Wilf last season.
"I think when Wilf came from United his confidence was in pieces, but he rebuilt his confidence and got him back to the level he knows he's capable of.
“If he can take my game to the next level then I'll be delighted and that's the reason I've joined the club.”
Townsend admits that he is not satisfied with the level he has reached thus far in his career, but hopes to remain at Selhurst Park for the foreseeable future.
"I'm only 25 years of age, I've got my best years ahead of me now, I just want to kick on and improve year by year and see how far I can take my career,” he added.
“Obviously I don't want to be moving around forever and I envisaged staying at Newcastle longer than six months but that didn't work out.
“I think I proved there that I'm still capable of playing in the Premier League and hopefully if I'm playing well enough and Crystal Palace are performing well enough then there's no reason why I can't stay here for many years to come.”
