Sturridge hopes to feature at Olympics despite viral meningitis

The Great Britain hopeful has become a doubt for the Games after being diagnosed with the illness in the last few days but remains upbeat and claims to be feeling a lot better

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has today confirmed that striker Daniel Sturridge is suffering with viral meningitis that could threaten his participation in the upcoming Olympic Games.
Di Matteo insisted that the Great Britain hopeful would receive the closest medical care and all the support Chelsea could provide, revealing that he had begun to feel unwell at the weekend.
Sturridge still believes he can play some part at the Games in London and the Italian remained similarly optimistic regarding the forward's health.
"He has viral meningitis," Di Matteo told Chelsea's official website. "I spoke to him and he feels better, we are going to progress his situation and hopefully he gets well as soon as possible and he will be able to join Olympic team.
"It's a question of daily monitoring his health, that's what matters most to everybody, his family and ourselves.
"He is receiving all of the support available to us, we've had a doctor with him from day one and we are receiving updates almost on an hourly basis with regards to his situation. He started feeling unwell over the weekend and was taken into hospital."
Sturridge said that he is already feeling better despite only being diagnosed a few days earlier and still plans on representing Team GB after being selected to Stuart Pearce's 18-man squad.
"The Chelsea medical team have been closely monitoring everything and they and the doctors and nurses at St Mary's Hospital have been outstanding throughout," he added.
"Thankfully, I am starting to feel a lot better and I am optimistic about being able to make the Olympics.
"I am fortunate to have received many wishes of support and I want to thank everybody who has sent messages, it is much appreciated."
