A superb free kick from Denilson and second half goals from Eduardo and Abou Diaby sent Arsenal back into third place in the Premier League table after victory over Hull City at the Emirates.

Shorn of skipper Cesc Fabregas, the north Londoners looked short on inspiration in a tepid first half with chances few and far between for both sides.

Indeed the visitors, who made just one change from the side that drew with Blackburn Rovers last weekend replacing Dean Marney with Nick Barmby, began the game in promising fashion with Craig Fagan shooting low and just wide in the opening minutes.

Arsenal, who brought in Denilson, Emmanuel Eboue and Eduardo for Bacary Sagna, Theo Walcott and Fabregas, by contrast were slow to grow into a game in a sloppy first half performance that grew increasingly heated as the game wore on.

Samir Nasri and Eduardo were looking the Gunners’ most promising threats. Eduardo teeing up the Frenchman after 15 minutes but Nasri could only shoot straight at Boaz Myhill in the Hull goal.

Minutes later and Eduardo worked a chance for himself inside the box. Receiving the ball from Eboue, he made a yard before opening his body and bending a curling effort just wide of the post.

However, a tame opening 45 minutes sprang into life just before the break after Nasri appeared to stand on Richard Garcia who crumpled to the ground, sparking a huge melee involving most of the players and even enticing Manuel Almunia from his goal.

Winter warmer - Tempers flare at the Emirates

Nasri and Stephen Hunt received bookings for their roles in the flare-up but the temperature of the game was raised a notch and within minutes Arsenal had their lead.

A cheap free kick won by Abou Diaby led to furious protests from the visitors. Yet Denilson took no notice and hit a superb effort, over the wall and low into the bottom corner past a despairing Myhill.

The Tigers complained long and hard to the referee about the award of the free kick but to no avail and as the half-time whistle blew the arguments continued down the tunnel.

Phil Brown opted to change things at the break sending on Seyi Olofinjana for Barmby but within minutes of the restart Arsenal almost doubled their lead.

Arshavin was the creator down the left flank, cutting inside and picking out Eduardo who turned brilliantly before toe poking with his weaker foot just wide of Myhill’s post.

The Gunners were looking a far stronger side, perhaps inspired by another fiery team-talk by Arsene Wenger, yet 10 minutes into the second half Hull wasted a golden opportunity to drag themselves back onto level terms.

Mikael Silvestre’s pull on Fagan looked innocuous but was right in front of referee Steve Bennett who pointed straight to the spot. Up stepped Geovanni but his weak shot was saved by a diving Almunia with Hunt heading the rebound wide.

Minutes later and Arsenal made the visitors pay for that miss by doubling their lead. A good move saw Diaby play a one-two with Alex Song before racing into the box and crossing for Eduardo to tap home from a matter of yards.

From then on it was simply a question of how many Arsenal would go on to score and with 10 minutes remaining it was little suprise when they added a third.

Again Diaby was the creator, shifting the ball to Arshavin before picking up the return pass from the Russian and smashing it past Myhill.

It was a disappointing end for the visitors who had started the game so promisingly and now sit just one point above the drop zone.

Arsenal, meanwhile, move into third place on goal difference, ahead of Aston Villa, who they face next on Boxing Day, and just two points behind Manchester United albeit with a game in hand.
