Tottenham Boss Harry Redknapp Rages At Referee After Manchester United Defeat
Harry blamed his side's defeat to Manchester United on referee Howard Webb.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp admitted he was furious with referee Howard Webb after his side were beaten 5-2 by Manchester United at Old Trafford.
The north Londoners were leading 2-0 when referee Webb awarded a controversial penalty after Heurelho Gomes tangled with Michael Carrick.
Cristiano Ronaldo converted the kick and the champions then went on to complete a memorable comeback to return to the top of the table.
However, speaking to Setanta Sports after the game, Redknapp insisted the penalty decision had turned the game.
“I felt there was no danger, I thought at 2-0 we came in at half-time, I honestly thought there was more goals in the game for us,” he said.
“Every time we attacked them we looked dangerous and we had a couple of other good opportunities.
“It’s difficult when you let five goals in but the turning point was definitely the penalty.
“It was a gift that wasn’t deserved. It was a terrible decision. It was a great bit of goalkeeping, the keeper has come out and played the ball away as clean as he can.”
United them completed an emphatic victory courtesy of goals by Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and another for Ronaldo and the Spurs boss admitted the penalty gave the home side a big boost.
“Listen I’m not saying he’s dishonest the referee [Howard Webb]. He’s supposed to be our best, but if he’s our best on today’s performance I’d hate to see the worst,” he added.
“It turned the game the other way without a doubt.
“I couldn’t see us getting beat at that stage, I thought it gave them a massive lift but we conceded some bad goals after that.”
The defeat leaves Tottenham in tenth place in the Premier League but Redknapp insisted he felt his side would have won the game but for the referee.
“I honestly think that if he hadn’t given that decision we wouldn’t have got beat here today for sure,” he concluded.
“He got it wrong today and it cost us dearly.”
