Uruguay Edge Brazil In Five-Goal Thriller
Uruguay topped Group B of the U-20 South American Championship after edging Brazil 3-2 in an action packed encounter at the Cachamay stadium of Puerto Ordaz on Wednesday...
The Uruguayans won the match with goals from Maximiliano Cordoba (22'), and Abel Hernandez (68', 84'). While Douglas Costa (33') and Alan Kardec (64') scored for Brazil.
With the win Uruguay finished top of Group B, with a maximum of twelve points. They were followed by Paraguay, and Brazil (both with 7 points) into the hexagonal round of the competition.
Uruguay commenced the match the stronger of the two sides, and they took a well-deserved lead in the 22nd minute when Maximiliano Cordoba beat Rafael with a powerful left-footed effort.
But Brazil hit back in the 33rd minute when exciting Gremio attacking midfielder Douglas Costa scored with an extraordinary individual effort.
Early in the second half both teams had their chances to score, but after a period of intense pressure, Alan Kardec put Brazil ahead for the first time with a well placed header in the 64th minute.
However, four minutes later new Palermo acquisition Abel Hernandez drew Uruguay level when he blasted the ball home from long-range.
Towards the end of the match the Uruguayans were clearly on top, and after a number of close calls, Hernandez finally snatched them the three points six minutes from full-time with a clinical finish after a speedy run.
They almost added their fourth in the final minute of the match, when a goal bound effort struck the right post.
Once again Uruguay proved that they are the team to beat in the competition, after a memorable victory over their fierce rivals.
In the earlier game, Paraguay came from behind to defeat Chile 2-1 with two second half goals. The win saw Paraguay advance to the final round at the expense of the Chileans.
