Auckland City eventually came out winners in an entertaining game against TP Mazembe to claim fifth spot in the Club World Cup.

Jason Hayne helped the New Zealand side to a 1-0 lead at half-time, but Mazembe fought back after the break and Ngandu Kasongo and Kiritsho Kasusula helped the Congolese outfit to the lead. Another Hayne goal drew things level again before Riki van Steeden eventually decided the match well into stoppage time.

Mazembe initially enjoyed the territorial advantage, but they failed to test Auckland goalkeeper Paul Gothard despite half-chances falling to Kazembe Mihayo and Mulota Kabangu.

However, Auckland took over the initiative after about 24 minutes. Chad Coombes’s defence-splitting pass sent Daniel Koprivcic in behind the Africans’ defence. Goalkeeper Muteba Kidiaba dashed from his area to divert the danger, but handled the ball and left the referee no choice but to show him the red card.

Adam Dickinson sprayed a long ball forward from the right-back position about five minutes after Kidiaba's dismissal and Jason Hayne beat the Mazembe goalie to the ball before slotting it into the empty goal from the edge of the box.

Mazembe scored the equaliser on the hour mark, when Ngandu Kasongo unleashed a 25-yard bullet that ended up in the top right-hand corner.

Mazembe had found their rhythm and they then laid siege to their adversaries’ goal. Kilitcho Kasusula was set up by Mputo and the former smashed the ball into the roof of the net with the aid of a slight deflection to make it 2-1.

Auckland’s response was swift in coming though. The ball deflected into the path of Young, whose eight-yards effort was bravely blocked by Bakula, only for Hayne to thunder the rebound into the roof of the net from 12 yards.

Dioko Kaluyituka then wasted two golden opportunities to snatch a winner. First, he spun his marker before striking the ball agonisingly across the goal and out for a goal-kick. Then, he hit the side-netting from an encouraging position inside the area.

Riki van Steeden prevented the match from going into extra-time with a late goal to help Auckland to fifth place. He burst into the Mazembe box, collected Young’s pass and slotted the ball past Bakula for a dramatic winner.
