Estudiantes Cramming Ahead Of Their First Exam At Club World Cup

Goal.com’s Tim Sturtridge reports on a patched up Estudiantes looking to keep their Club World Cup hopes in one piece...

The preparations of Alejandro Sabella and his Estudiantes squad have hardly been ideal ahead of the side’s first game in the 2010 Club World Cup.

Heavy rainfall in Abu Dhabi has restricted the time players have been able to spend on the training pitch, with the majority of the team’s preparations being restricted to an indoor gym.

Other set-backs for Sabella have included a number of selection headaches which have occurred for a variety of reasons. The club’s veteran striker Jose Luis Calderon announced his retirement from the game in the week leading up to the tournament in the Middle East. Calderon’s decision freed up a place in the squad that Sabella decided to fill with on loan midfielder Jose Sosa.

Unfortunately for Sabella, FIFA ruled that Sosa would be unable to take to the pitch for Estudiantes during the competition due to his registration being held by Bayern Munich.

Now Sabella’s talented midfielder Marcelo Carrusca has limped out of training in the build to the game with Pohang Steelers.

It would be fair to say that the reigning Copa Libertadores champions are enjoying a less than ideal build-up to their semi-final.
Sabella must also choose between Juan Manuel Salgueiro and Maximiliano Nunez to partner Mauro Boselli upfront for Wednesday’s game. The Urugauyan Salgueiro has been nursing a back injury and will be subject to a late fitness test while Nunez is now believed to be fully fit.

The starting XI expected to represent Estudiantes on Wednesday is Damian Albil between the sticks. Clemente Rodriguez, Christian Cellay, Leandro Desabato and German Re in defence.

The midfield will likely consist of Enzo Perez, Rodrigo Brana, Juan Sebastian Veron and Leandro Benitez. Up top it will be a late call between Juan Manuel Salgueiro and Maximiliano Nunez to link up with Mauro Boselli.

The most important name on the team sheet for Sabella is undoubtedly Veron and the team’s linchpin is fighting to be fit ahead of the semi-final. The pair faced the press on Tuesday but the head coach was less than enthusiastic with his predictions for the game as he claimed, "I don’t have a team right now".
