PSG Edge Sochaux; Monaco Hit By Late Caen Strikes

Paris Saint-Germain recovered from their heavy defeat at the hands of Bordeaux last weekend with a narrow home victory over Sochaux while Monaco threw away a two goal cushion against Caen.

SM Caen 2-2 AS Monaco

Monaco will be gaining quite a reputation as a team lacking in bottle after suffering from another side dramatically coming back at them today as they only picked up a draw in Caen. While their 2-2 draw against Caen would have been an acceptable result at the beginning of play, Ricardo would have been highly disappointed to lose two strikes in the last 16 minutes.

Things had started brilliantly for les Monegasques. Juan-Pablo Pino had been inexplicably left out of the side last weekend but was immediately recalled after the humbling the red and whites received against Nantes. The Colombian immediately set about showing just why he should have been included as he scored a fine individual effort. The diminutive forward beat several defends before rocketing a fine shot into the top left hand corner of the net.

Midway through a quiet half things got even better for the visitors as Alejandro Alonso shot les Monegasques two ahead. Yoann Mollo made the goal possible with a beautifully arced right footed centre, which was controlled by the wide midfielder before being powered into the net.

This was a watershed moment in the game as Caen immediately fought back and had a goal disallowed as Steve Savidan picked out Juan Eluchans at the back post, however, the South American’s headed effort was disallowed.

Spurred on by this, Caen dominated the second half. Rémy Gomis hit the bar with a fine shot and Savidan had strong penalty appeals turned down. Moments later, the strong forward struck as Fahid Ben Khalfallah led a counter-attack that culminated in Savidan shooting into the net.

Moanco were visibly shaken by this blow and had to withstand significant pressure as Caen flooded forward. A long ball forward in the final minute was flicked on hopefully by Anthony Deroin. Benjamin Nivet controlled neat before sending a powerful equalising strike beyond Yohann Thuram and into the visiting goal, sparking wild celebrations from the hosts and despair in the visiting ranks.

Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 FC Sochaux-Montbéliard

PSG produced a dominant performance against Sochaux at the Parc des Princes this evening but were still made to squeeze out a narrow victory over les Lionceaux.

Les Parisiens were utterly dominant in an impressive first half, which was capped by a penalty scored by Guillaume Hoarau in the final minute of the half after Jérôme Rothen had been fouled by last weekend’s goal hero for Sochaux, Damien Perquis.

To that point of proceedings, PSG had pieced together an impressive performance that simply lacked a goal. Rothen had set the tone with a shot from distance the flew narrowly wide of goal while Peguy Luyindula had been a really menacing presence. He broke free on goal after quarter of an hour only to be denied by the hand of Sochaux stopper Jérémy Gavanon, however, this was outside the box and so the visiting ‘keeper was lucky to receive a yellow card.

The best chance would arrive on the half hour mark, however, Luyindula could not react properly to Stéphane Sessegnon’s misplaced shot and ended pushing the ball wide of goal. Hoarau would shoot well over the bar moments later after Luyindula had deftly flicked the ball on.

One goal from such a half of domination would have worried Paul Le Guen a little and, with Sochaux’s first attack of the second period, they had drawn level. Vaclav Sverkos scored his first goal in France after being fed by Romain Pitau and launching an early shot at goal that caught Mickaël Landreau by surprise.

Matters could have grown graver for the hosts as fine hold up play from Mevlut Erding, who was surprisingly quiet, allowed Michael Isabey to shoot goalwards, however, Landreau made a good stop.

Just after the hour mark, PSG’s low-key second half performance would explode as Jérôme Rothen’s corner was flicked on by Sylvain Armand to Luyindula, who marked a lively game with a well deserved goal.

As ever, Le Guen’s side retreated into their shells after grabbing the lead and rarely looked flustered by Sochaux’s offence. It was far from spectacular but les Parisien had bounced back from last weekend’s humbling defeat by Bordeaux.
