Guy Lacombe Praises Super-Sub Asamoah Gyan

A thigh injury has decimated Asamoah Gyan’s start to life in Ligue 1, however, he received special praise from head coach Guy Lacombe after coming off the bench to help Rennes to a 2-1 victory over Lorient.

Asamoah Gyan could not have picked a more opportune moment to score his first competitive goal for Stade Rennais. With his side trailing 1-0 against local rivals Lorient, the Ghanaian striker was plucked from the bench by Guy Lacombe to level for les Rouges et Noirs with quarter of an hour remaining.

As well as being the goal that preserved Rennes’ impressive unbeaten run, it also set the platform for Moussa Sow’s late winner.

A recurrent thigh problem was largely the reason that Gyan failed to make more of an impact at his previous club, Udinese, and it has restricted the 23 year-old to just 171 minutes of Ligue 1 football this season. Nevertheless, Lacombe was left delighted by his substitute’s showing.

“Asamoah Gyan is a player who has been largely ignored by our opponents,” Lacombe explained to his club’s official website. “I have seen him in training and I watched him during the ten minutes he played against Nantes – he is doing well.”

Unsurprisingly, the former PSG boss was also left contended with his side’s comeback, which must be deemed something of a personal victory as both the goal scorers were the result of changes Lacombe made.

“In the first half we missed too many chances and were punished,” said Rennes’ moustachioed trainer. “It was not the bench that made the difference, it was the whole squad of 18. All the players made great efforts.

“If we can match the return phase of league games that we managed last season, our club will offer beautiful views.”

Indeed, Lacombe is right. After taking over the Breton club around 12 months ago, the 53 year-old saw his side charge from mid-table obscurity to a UEFA Cup berth. Another such run would surely see them finish in the top four.

No side has lost fewer games than the Bretons this season; a defeat against Grenoble is their only blemish in Ligue 1, some 16 matches ago.
