Injustices Levelled Out – Lorient Boss Gourcuff
Christian Gourcuff, head coach of Lorient, admitted his side will play better matches this season but could not help but to be delighted as his side recovered from two goals down to beat Olympique Marseille…
A truly memorable 15 minute spell at the end of yesterday’s match between the two sides in Provence ended with les Merlus staging an incredibly unlikely comeback to triumph over their hosts 3-2.
The odds had seemed stacked against Christian Gourcuff’s side for much of the match, particularly when Marseille went two goals up after a disputed penalty decision. A momentum swing was evident as Mamadou Niang had a perfectly good goal disallowed for offside, allowing the guests to hope.
Indeed, despite playing a relatively mediocre match, Lorient would dig deep and would find three goals in the dying moments of the game to secure all three points.
“On the move that led to the Marseille penalty, the foul was committed outside the box,” Gourcuff bemoaned to France Football after the match.
“M. Chapron erred again, as he had done with Nice [earlier this season, against Lyon]. I accept that there may be refereeing mistakes but we must do everything we can to prevent it from happening again. He refused a Marseille goal for offside, so things balanced out.
“For us, this was a perfect scenario, even if my side did not play their best match. What matters is that we have taken three points that will be important for us to maintain [our Ligue 1 place]. I think they could count in the end.”
Gourcuff felt that his side could become slicker, explaining to the club’s official website, “I think that the team play could become a little more effective, with less waste.”
