Argentine Clausura Team Of The Week: Round 9

Gregory Sica of Goal.com picks out the best performers of Round 9 of the Argentine Clausura Championship...

Gaston Fernandez - Estudiantes de La Plata
BEST X1

GOALKEEPER

Diego Pozo (Colon)

Made a number of fine saves to rescue Colon a vital point against Arsenal that keeps them in second place. His most important save was without doubt the powerful penalty kick he stopped from Mario Leguizamon in the first half.

DEFENDERS

Juan Sabia (Argentinos Juniors)

The talented left-back was Argentinos' standout performer in their victory over league leaders Lanus. He made few mistakes during the game, and this gave his side the necessary confidence to start to believe in themselves. Not only was he good in his marking, but he looked dangerous when dashing forward to help out in the attack.

Marcos Angeleri (Estudiantes)

Angeleri played a key role as Estudiantes edged Boca. He was strong in defence, and he also made a number of telling runs down the right wing. He continues to grow in his game, and it's no wonder he is being chased by several clubs from Europe.

Franco Sosa (Racing)

Earned Racing three valuable points in the relegation battle with Rosario Central when he curled in a spectacular free-kick late in the second half. He was also very firm in the defence at all moments, and looked dangerous when moving to the attack.

MIDFIELDERS

Gaston Machin (Independiente)

He returned to action after a lengthy absence, and was Independiente's most important player as they claimed three valuable points. "El Rubio" did well to take Mario Bolatti out of the game, and this improved his team's chances of winning the match.

Fabian Rinaudo (Gimnasia La Plata)

Was crucial in the Gimnasia midfield, particularly because he never lost the ball, and made a number of important interceptions, especially when River Plate were all over them. He steered his team forward throughout the entire ninety minutes.

Daniel Montenegro (Independiente)

The captain led by example, playing a key role as his side came from behind to defeat Huracan. Montenegro scored Independiente's winner in the first half, but he never celebrated the goal in respect to Huracan, the team he still supports as a fan.

Mauro Formica (Newell's)

Formica was very impressive in the Newell's midfield, and the only way Tigre could stop him was with infringements. He was the key organiser of his side throughout the game and did a very good job of this.

FORWARDS

Gaston Fernandez (Estudiantes)

"La Gata" curled in an unstoppable free-kick to give Estudiantes a much-needed win over Boca. The former River striker never stopped running, and was a constant menace to the Boca defence. By far his best performance of the season.

Victor Figueroa (Godoy Cruz)

Scored twice in Godoy Cruz's intense 2-2 draw with Gimnasia de Jujuy. The attacking midfielder-turn forward was extremely lively throughout the encounter and could have even scored a hat-trick. Likely to be snapped up by one of the big guns next season.

Hernan Lopez (Velez)

Not only did he earn and convert the penalty kick that allowed Velez to climb to the top of the league standings, but the Uruguayan was always a threat to the San Lorenzo defence. After a slow start he has finally won over the Velez faithful.
