The Bianconeri are set to sign a centre-back before the close of the transfer window and have a number of stoppers to choose from
General director Giuseppe Marotta has confirmed that he is “looking for a defender” as the Serie A champions are without the injured Andrea Barzagli until the end of October, while Giorgio Chiellini is suspended for the first two matches of the 2014-15 campaign.
Angelo Ogbonna could also potentially leave the club after a disappointing first season in 2013-14.
Marotta has yet to make a serious move for a defender, but there are a host of players he is considering.
Talks have taken place with Olympiakos over Kostas Manolas. The Greek defender, who is of interest to Roma too, is almost certain to depart Athens following the arrival of Alberto Botia. He is available for around €15 million, but Juventus are not prepared to pay such a high price and the fee would need to drop.
Manchester City’s Matija Nastasic is greatly admired by Marotta and is a possibility as he has fallen down the pecking order at Eastlands. Juventus tried to sign the Serbian when he left Fiorentina in 2012 and could return for him. The Citizens will listen to offers.
There are also a number of cheaper alternatives to Nastasic and Manolas.
VIVA ZAPATA | Allegri is a big fan and has added Colombian to shortlist
Stefan Savic has been steady if not spectacular since joining Fiorentina in 2012 from Man City in a swap deal involving Nastasic and could be involved in another part exchange featuring Ogbonna.
Meanwhile, Inter’s Hugo Campagnaro, 34, and AC Milan’s Daniele Bonera, 33, represent experienced options. Like Nastasic, Juventus have attempted to buy both players during their younger years. Campagnaro is currently regarded as one of Marotta's preferred options as he can be signed at a low cost.
New coach Massimiliano Allegri is also a big fan of his former defender Cristian Zapata and would sanction a move for the Milan man. The stopper enjoyed an excellent World Cup with Colombia but could struggle for game time at San Siro following the arrival of Alex from PSG.
A number of defensive-minded players will move on from Juventus this summer to free up space. Mauricio Isla has already joined QPR on loan, while Frederik Sorensen (likely to Leeds), Simone Pepe, Marco Motta and Reto Ziegler will all depart either temporarily or permanently.
Any sale of Vidal would also free up funds for Juventus to raise the bar in their search for a new defender.
