The World Cup exploded into life this evening as the Netherlands crushed reigning champions Spain in a re-run of their 2010 final.

A Xabi Alonso penalty was followed by a Dutch masterclass that saw Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben weigh in with two goals apiece and Stefan de Vrij grabbing the other in a 5-1 rout at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador.

The performance from Louis van Gaal's side didn't go unoticed by some of the big stars of the tournament and they took to social media to give their thoughts on one of the most emphatic displays in World Cup history.

You'd have been forgiven for thinking it was the only game of the day, but Mexico players popped up to thank their fans after their 1-0 win over Cameroon in their Group A opener. Meanwhile in Group D, England and Italy have both arrived in Manaus ahead of their clash tomorrow, while Uruguay's goalkeeper Fernando Muslera is having a bit of difficulty sleeping.
