Robbie Keane admitted last year that he considered retiring from international football in the dark days which followed Republic of Ireland's demoralising displays at Euro 2012. Furthermore, there were those that felt it was the only honorable thing for the captain to do, given the anonymous nature of his performances in Poland.

"I thought about it," the veteran forward admitted, "but the thought of never putting on a green shirt again was quite difficult to come around to." So the patriot played on.

Doubts remained, though, over whether he was still worthy of a place in Ireland's starting line-up. However, over the past fortnight, he has silenced his critics - hopefully once and for all - with a double against Georgia and a hat-trick in his record-breaking 126th appearance for his country, against Faroe Islands on Friday night.

As Goal Ireland's Ronan Murphy outlines below, Keane is not only worthy of this week's World Player of the Week award, he also deserves to be belatedly recognised as a true Irish great.

"Friday night's 2014 World Cup qualifier with the Faroe Islands was always going to be a momentous one for the Republic of Ireland captain," he explains.

"But not only did the Los Angeles Galaxy striker surpass Shay Given's caps record, he also put in one of his greatest performances in a green jersey.

"Keane's treble - the second of his international career - took his overall goals tally to 59, moving him to 19th on the all-time top scorers' list, overtaking Argentina legend Gabriel Batistuta.

"Perhaps now those who have long been inexplicably reluctant to herald Keane as a fine international forward will belatedly afford him the respect he deserves."

Congratulations to Robbie Keane, Goal's 213th World Player of the Week winner!
