Meanwhile, Real Madrid produced an emphatic 4-1 win over Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabeu, fourth-placed Malaga triumphed 2-1 at Levante and Valencia moved up to fifth with a last-gasp victory at Celta Vigo.
Here, Goal.com takes a look at the pick of the bunch from the 23rd round of Liga action.
In goal, Willy Caballero was in fine form for Malaga and denied Obafemi Martins on several occasions.
At the back, Guilherme Siqueira impressed for Granada and scored another goal from the penalty spot, while Gerard Pique netted in front of his new-born son Milan, who was in the crowd for Sunday's midday game along with the player's partner Shakira. Jordi Amat makes up the defence for his disciplined display in the win for Rayo over Atletico.
In midfield, his team-mate Javi Fuego is included for a combative performance against Atletico, while Espanyol's Joan Verdu led the Catalans to an impressive 4-0 win at Athletic Bilbao. Isco impressed with both goals for Malaga in the 2-1 win over Levante, and Andres Iniesta was at his brilliant best for Barcelona in their 6-1 success over Getafe, outshining even Lionel Messi on Sunday.
Cristiano Ronaldo netted a brilliant hat-trick and sent a warning out to former side Manchester United ahead of Real Madrid's Champions League clash with Sir Alex Ferguson's team on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Lass helped Rayo to a surprise win over Atletico and Real Sociedad's Antoine Griezmann was key in the Basques' victory over Zaragoza.
