In a truly global edition of World Player of the Week, this week's prize is awarded to Beto, the stand-out star of the I-League this week and one of the most impressive players in the division this term.
The 33-year-old delivered two commanding displays for Churchill Brothers, contributing directly to three goals and receiving a Man of the Match award as the Goan outfit secured six points to maintain their four-point advantage at the top of the pile.
Having gone a goal behind against Pailan Arrows, Beto inspired his side to a sensational comeback, setting up Henri Antouchet for two strikes in the space of three minutes before Israil Gurung settled the match just a couple of minutes later.
And the Brazilian maintained his tremendous run of form heading into the weekend clash with United Sikkim, heading home from a corner after just four minutes to help his side secure a hard-fought but vitally-important win as they pursue title glory.
Goal.com's Rahul Bali had this to say on the veteran's stunning form of late: "Beto has scored 11 goals from 12 matches in the I-League and has six assists to his name already. Of the 37 goals Churchill have scored in the league to date this season, Beto has had a hand in 45.94% of them. What's more, his leadership qualities have come to the fore in a year when they lost Arindam Bhattacharya, Gouramangi Moirangthem and Lalrindika Ralte - three India internationals - over the summer. While they were certainly not the favourites to mount a title challenge at the start of the season, Beto's form has proved to be the inspiration in Churchill's surge up the table.
"He is deadly from set-pieces and his ability to score from distance is second to none in the I-League. His late runs into the box often result in a goal."
| Congratulations to Beto, Goal.com's 191st World Player of the Week winner! |
