Sebastien Frey's heroics in goal for Genoa helped the Grifone pick up a vital win at Atalanta in their bid to avoid a dogfight at the bottom end, bringing to a close a long losing streak in the process.
Frey's former Fiorentina team-mate Alessandro Gamberini followed up on Monday night with a strong defensive performance as Napoli held off Cagliari before snatching a late winner themselves. Roma also won by a single goal, with Marquinhos' great form in the back line being key to their 1-0 victory at Pescara. Inter's latest defeat came thanks in part to the quality of Parma's defence, particularly that of Gabriel Paletta, who overcame the absence of Alessandro Lucarelli in a stirring performance.
The Argentine wasn't the only man to stand out for the Ducali, though, with Jonathan Biabiany regularly putting Inter on the back foot with some fantastic wing play. Alvaro Gonzalez, meanwhile, rounded off the four-day weekend with a superb showing - and the opening goal - in Lazio's demolition of Udinese. The best performance of the weekend came from Josip Ilicic, whose pair of brilliantly-taken goals helped Palermo to a Sicily derby success over Catania, while Alessio Cerci reminded former employers Fiorentina of his abilities, scoring one and threatening on countless other occasions in Torino's 2-2 draw.
In the attacking ranks, Francesco Totti again demonstrated his evergreen qualities in Roma's victory at the Adriatico, while Mounir El Hamdaoui was Fiorentina's saviour, coming off the bench to earn a draw at Torino. But the final word goes to Stephan El Shaarawy, who was a constant thorn in Juventus' side as the Serie A champions went down to a 1-0 defeat against Milan at San Siro.
