Goal.com selects Hwang Jin-Sung as its Player of the Month for August
The midfielder's accomplishments for club and country earned him the accolade, while Wang Yongpo, Marcus Tulio Tanaka, and Shinji Kagawa also deserved mention
South Korea debutant Hwang Jin-Sung has been selected by Goal.com's team of editors as the Asian Player of the Month for August. The Pohang Steelers midfielder had a very productive August for his club, scoring three league goals as his club concluded the first stage of the K-League season in fifth place. The 28-year-old also scored the game-winning goal in his team's 3-2 win against Jeonbuk Motors in the Korean Cup quarter-finals.
'Hwang Kaka', as fans call him, was also recognised as the K-League MVP through the first stage of the season after thrice being named the league's weekly MVP, and capped off August with his first international appearance, coming on as a substitute in South Korea's 2-1 win over Zambia.
Goal.com's chiefs also heaped praise on prolific scorer Wang Yongpo, who with his four league goals and two cup goals had a productive month for Shandong Luneng, as well as Nagoya Grampus defender Marcus Tulio Tanaka who dazzled with a four-goal performance when played as a striker early in the month.
Meanwhile, readers overwhelming recognised Manchester United newcomer Shinji Kagawa as their pick for Asian Player of the Month. The former Dortmund man clearly impressed Sir Alex Ferguson after earning starting lineup roles in the club's first two matches and scoring in his Old Trafford debut.
Kagawa, who was the first player to receive Player of the Month honors twice, is sure to continue to appear in our Asian Team of the Month as he evolves into his role at United.
