With the tournament about to begin, we ask you which marksman you think will emerge as the competition's top scorer
With the opening day of Euro 2012 upon us and as the teams are put through their final paces, it's time to start looking ahead at who might be the tournament's top goalscorer.
The obvious favourites for the Golden Boot include Arsenal striker Robin van Persie, the Premier League's top goalscorer this season with 30 goals, and Real Madrid man Cristiano Ronaldo, who will need to be firing on all cylinders if Portugal are to make if out of a very tough group including both Netherlands and Germany.
Elsewhere, we have Germany trio Miroslav Klose, Mario Gomez and Thomas Muller who may have something to say on the matter, with the latter duo naturally desperate to recover from their recent Champions League final heartache.
|KARIM OF THE CROP?
|10/1||Karim Benzema is 10/1 with bet365 to finish as top scorer at Euro 2012.|
France have emerged as many people's outsiders and Karim Benzema, scorer of a double in their last friendly outing against Estonia, is a leading contender should they progress to the latter stages.
Mario Balotelli looks likely to be given the nod by Italy coach Cesare Prandelli to start up front and while he is, of course, frustratingly inconsistent, he has a habit of scoring big goals in big games.
Dark horses Poland also have a leading contender for the much-coveted award in Robert Lewandowski. The Borussia Dortmund striker is heavily linked with a move to Manchester United and must be in with a shout on home turf, while Netherlands striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar also enjoyed a superb season in Germany for Schalke.
Or could the stage be set for Chelsea and Spain striker Fernando Torres? Despite a frustrating first full season at Stamford Bridge, he is likely to go into the tournament full of confidence after becoming the holders' first-choice forward in the absence of David Villa through injury.
But, sadly, you will notice that there is no England player listed as the full effect of Wayne Rooney's two-game ban begins to fully sink in.
So who will emerge at the end of Euro 2012 with the Golden Boot? Will any of the choices listed be in with a chance? Or will someone else come out of nowhere and surprise us all? Vote in the poll and let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
