Top Spending Leagues During 2010 Summer Transfer Window
Goal.com lines up the biggest spending leagues of the 2010 summer transfer window.
By Stefan Coerts
The 2010 summer transfer window slammed shut on Tuesday to end a rather interesting transfer period. Our article earlier on Wednesday already revealed that English side Manchester City spent the most money on the transfer market this summer, with fellow Premier League side Chelsea also among the big spenders. This has resulted in top position for the Premier League in the 'top spending leagues table'. All Premier League teams together spent well over €400 million, resulting in a net expenditure of about €237m.
Somewhat surprisingly, Russia sit second in the table of top spending leagues. Clubs such as Rubin Kazan, Zenit St. Petersburg and Spartak Moscow all parted company with considerable amounts of money and had relatively low transfer revenues, resulting in a net expenditure of €93m.
Turkey and Ukraine come third and fourth ahead of the Italian league in fifth position. The Serie A sides parted company with close to €300m, but the transfers of star players such as Diego, Mario Balotelli, Leonardo Bonucci, Aleksandr Kolarov and Simon Kjaer have led to a net expenditure of 'only' €23m.
The fact that La Liga and the Bundesliga are not among the top spending leagues when it comes to net expenditure doesn't mean that no cash changed hands in those leagues though. All Primera Division sides together spent €262m, resulting in third position in the gross expenditure table. The Bundesliga sits fourth in the table with a gross expenditure of €156m. One remarkable fact is that the Championship, England's second tier, is the number 10 when it comes to gross expenditure, well ahead of leagues such as the Dutch Eredivisie, the Greek Super League and Argentina's top flight.
