Glo-CAF Awards 2009: Tresor Mputu Mabi - Local African Player Of the Year

In a ceremony held in Accra, Ghana, the Congolese phenomenon Tresor Mputu Mabi had his dream year end with the most coveted of individual title on the continent. The Glo-CAF African Player of the Year award comes in to crown Africa's worst-kept secret, the skipper of Tout-Puissant Mazembe, the most recent Champions League winners.

In an environment where clubs and players alike are all too eager to get offers from European clubs, a player this good should have left the continent a long time ago. Mentioned in the same breath as the Ahmed Hassans and Mohamed Aboutrikas as one of Africa's best local-based players, Tresor Mputu arrived at Tout-Puissant Mazembe in 2002 at just seventeen and has gradually grown into the phenomenon he is today.

If he did so by slowly maturing in Lumumbashi, Tresor Mputu is now without a doubt the African continent's best player. And The Confederation of African football has given their award for Local Player of the Year to the right man. 2009 was all about Tout-Puissant Mazembe in Africa and it was all about Mputu.

By winning the Congolese Championship (his second with Tout-Puissant Mazembe after the one in 2007), the African Champions League and being named the best player at the African Championship of Nations (CHAN), not to mention winning the African Super Cup a month ago, Tresor Mputu finally proved everyone right and seems more than ready to jump in with the big boys in Europe very soon.

The man has been said to be a better striker than Samuel Eto'o (by Claude Le Roy who gave the Inter man his first shot with the Indomitable Lions) and has everyone from Arsenal to Marseille singing his praise. But no matter the club he's going to end up at in this summer, they're going to get one of the greatest African footballers in activity, just polished enough to have a seamless transition into European football.

His physical strength is not the greatest but the diminutive playmaker and striker makes up for it in speed and has technical skilles that would make many FIFA World Player of the Year recipients jealous or at least insecure.

Not insecure at all about his capabilities, Mputu has declared many times over that he wanted to finish a mission that most believe was to win the 2007 Congolese Championship, but by staying two more seasons, he won the ultimate African club competition, and is now just ripe to make it in Europe. At 25, he has the best footballing years of his career ahead of him.

For the moment Belgian side Standard de Liège seemed to have been the hottest link after years of courtship on their part and the presence of Mputu's best friend, Dieumerci Mbokani, another Congolese player doing well in Europe. With his Congolese compatriots, Mputu will be facing Senegal and Cameroon in the next qualification campaign for the 2012 African Cup of Nations, and those teams best beware, they have an African Player of the Year in their midst.
