Roman Soldier: Roma Must Sign Up Reborn Rodrigo Taddei Immediately

The list of Taddei’s suitors is growing by the minute and Vince Masiello says “sign him up already!”

Roma's Rodrigo Taddei celebrates scoring for Roma against Siena
In the beginning, it was Fiorentina. Now, if you are to believe the fickle reports of the Italian press, Juventus are set to poke their big nose into it. And if the Old Lady comes a-knockin’, just say your prayers and brace for the worst.

Roma’s failure to tie down Rodrigo Taddei before he neared the end of his contract with the Giallorossi is causing quite a stir in the peninsula, and of course even more so in the Eternal City.

Suggestions that the Brazilian was in a downward spiral and that his exit on a free transfer would not have stung that much have been swept away in recent weeks as the 29-year-old has proved he has still juice left in him.

Taddei has rediscovered the form that quickly made him a fan favourite at the Olimpico following his Bosman move from Siena in the summer of 2005.

And that ruling which re-shaped world football in 1995 is now again dangled over his future like the sword of Damocles.

The former Sao Paulo man will run out of contract in June and now it’s that time of the year when free agents-to-be hold a gun to the head of their clubs to collect a spicy fresh deal.

And it never helps when other clubs, alerted to their potential availability, butt in. We all know how representatives are specifically trained to drum up interest in their clients, fake or real.

If you ask me, Juve’s interest is as fake as it can be as I doubt that Taddei’s name sounds glamorous enough for the Bianconeri big shots who will have to soothe their fans’ ‘unrest’ next summer following a sub-par season.

Well, Taddei sounds glamorous enough for the Lupi supporters who have grown to appreciate a player whose work ethic is breathtaking and whose versatility makes him every coach’s dream.

“I have waited and worked hard, even during the Christmas holidays,” he explained last week.

“I was at Trigoria all the time, except for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. I overcame my difficult moment thanks to my family, to my friends and my team-mates.

“I’m now finally back to my best after keeping silent for a while and working hard. I am now reaping the fruits and my dream is to stay at Roma and end my career here.”

So, what are Roma waiting for? Taddei is not even thinking about turning his back on the club before the Maggica directors make their intentions clear, even though he is legally entitled to talk to other sides.

The Giallorossi might now have to pay the price for their short-sightedness, although I’m ready to bet that Taddei won’t play hardball. He is one of a kind in that respect: he has never demanded a pay rise since arriving from Tuscany almost five years ago.

But, after all is said and done, what really matters is having one of the best all-around wing-backs in Serie A still in your squad in years to come. You can’t put a price on that. Long may the ‘Aurelio’ live in Rome.
