Goal.com Special: Top 10 Ligue 1 Transfers
With the league calendar in France now taking a mid-season break, Robin Bairner looks at the best transfers in Ligue 1 from the summer…
10) Aly Cissokho (Porto to Olympique Lyonnais) – When it came down to choosing the 10th player on this list, it was a tight run race between Cissokho and Lucho Gonzalez, who moved from Porto to Marseille. Cissokho’s ability to stay fit gave him the edge over the creative Argentine. The young French left-back has impressed with his raids down the flank and wicked crossing, and there seems to be much more to come from the defender in the future. Has swam against the tide somewhat as OL’s defence has been so poor on the whole.
9) Mevlut Erding (Sochaux to Paris Saint-Germain) – The Turkish forward would likely be higher up the list had he managed to feature on a more regular basis, but the potential he has shown when he has been on the park has justified his presence on this list. In the absence of the injured Guillaume Hoarau, the former Sochaux man has largely carried les Parisiens’ offence, striking seven times already.
8) Christophe Jallet (Lorient to Paris Saint-Germain) – Signed by les Parisiens for the unremarkable fee of €2.5 million this summer, Jallet has impressed with the capital club, even displacing Ludovic Giuly as Antoine Kombouare’s regular right winger. Versatile enough to play on the right side of the defence, Jallet has proven one of the club’s most reliable players, scoring three times as well as providing sterling service to the Parc des Princes club.
7) Laurent Koscielny (Tours to Lorient) – Regarded as one of the top players in the second flight last term, Koscielny had attracted interest from the likes of Bordeaux before replacing the vacuum created by Michael Ciani’s departure at Lorient. He has been one of only two ever-presents in les Merlus’ side – the other being Sigamary Diarra (another fine free to Christian Gourcuff’s side from the second flight) – and has impressed on a remarkable scale.
6) Michael Ciani (Lorient to Girondins de Bordeaux) – Souleymane Diawara was transferred to Marseille in the summer much to the chagrin of Bordeaux, but Laurent Blanc’s men were far from tardy in the transfer market, moving swiftly to snap up Ciani. Solid at Lorient, the physical central defender has slotted into the champions’ setup with no problems, even proving to be an improvement on the reliable Senegalese.
5) Emir Spahic (Lokomotiv Moscow to Montpellier) – When Montpellier were promoted in the summer, they were recognised as a team who scored freely but who may have problems at the other end of the field. Spahic has proven to be the man to help plug the holes, helping La Paillade up to third spot in the standings. In addition, the Bosnian international has weighed in with a couple of useful goals.
4) Lisandro Lopez (Porto to Olympique Lyonnais) – Adductor injuries have hampered ‘Licha’s’ start to life in Le Championnat, though that has not prevented him becoming one of the outstanding talents in the league over the course of the last five months. The Argentine has already shown his keen eye for goal both domestically and on the continent, and who knows where struggling OL would be without their record signing.
3) Fabrice Abriel (Lorient to Olympique de Marseille) – Undoubtedly the bargain of the summer in France, veteran creative midfielder Abriel made the jump from Breton club Lorient to Marseille for a modest fee of €2.5m. Whilst Lucho has been unpredictable due to injuries, Abriel has been consistently excellent this term. Signed as a bit-part player, he has become a vital figure in the squad.
2) Gervinho (Le Mans to Lille) – A somewhat erratic presence on the flank with Le Mans, Ivorian international Gervinho was always known to be a potentially brilliant talent. Sold to Lille for approximately €6m as a replacement for Michel Bastos, Rudi Garcia has harnessed the 22-year-old’s talent spectacularly. Gervinho has established himself as one of France’s best players, firing a league-high 11 goals.
1) Yoann Gourcuff (Milan to Girondins de Bordeaux) – Simply put, Bordeaux produced one of the top pieces of business anywhere over the summer by stealing talented playmaker Gourcuff away from the Rossoneri for a fee in the region of €13m – a snip compared to several deals conducted in France and abroad. Having already proven himself with les Girondins in Ligue 1 last term on loan, the Aquitaine outfit utilised their option to sign him permanently. Has yet to reach his very best, but even at 90 per cent, Gourcuff is still a cut above in France’s top flight.
What are your views on this topic? Would you have included Lucho Gonzalez, Gabriel Heinze or Yohann Pele, who are three of the biggest omissions from the above list? Who do you believe has been the top summer signing in Ligue 1 so far, and who has been the best value? Goal.com wants to know what YOU think…
