BEST XI
Formation: 3-4-3
Goalkeeper
Julio Sergio (Roma): Filling in for Doni, he made a number of impressive stops to help Roma to a 1-1 draw at the San Siro against Inter. He robbed the prolific Diego Milito and Sulley Muntari during the first-half and was safe for the rest of the match.
Defence
Cristian Zaccardo (Parma): The former Italian international is certainly enjoying life more at Parma than he did at Wolfsburg, another competent performance down the right side to helping the Gialloblu after their return from Serie B. They are in seventh place!
Thiago Silva (Milan): The 25-year-old opened the scoring at the Stadio Olimpico, but that is not why he is in the Best XI. He has formed arguably the best centre-back partnership in Serie A with Alessandro Nesta and most definitely satisfied coach Leonardo with a secure display against Lazio.
Cesare Natali (Fiorentina): Led the Viola backline with exceptional personality against his former side, he did not put a foot wrong and gave Simone Pepe and Bernardo Corradi absolutely no space to work with.
Midfield
Mauro Camoranesi (Juventus): The World Cup winner opened the scoring in Bergamo with two goals in quick succession, proving a handful for the defence. The veteran is no doubt a key piece of Ciro Ferrara’s Bianconeri and adds an important dimension and cutting edge to the
midfield.
Felipe Melo (Juventus): The Brazilian showed why the Italian giants paid so much for his signature, a great job in the middle of the park and an absolutely fantastic goal in the topsy-turvy romp over Atalanta.
Daniele Conti (Cagliari): The island outfit now have four wins on the trot, with no shortage of assistance from this player. Throughout the match, he actively closed down the opposition and sparked the attack, but his most crucial involvement came in the last five minutes when he opened the scoring and was then also involved in the goal that condemned Sampdoria to a spectacular loss.
Juan Vargas (Fiorentina): In devastating form lately for the Viola and made another telling contribution as his late set-piece found the back of the net, albeit with a bit of luck, to give Fiorentina a precious three points at the Stadio Friuli. Is it any wonder he is being linked with Real Madrid?
Attack
Marcelo Zalayeta (Bologna): The Rossoblu are in the midst of the relegation battle, but ‘El Pantera’ scored a well-taken double and was the star in the 3-1 victory over Palermo, a result that gave Bologna just a bit of breathing space.
Hernan Crespo (Genoa): One of the most natural poachers of his generation, ‘Valdanito’ still hasn’t lost his touch. He pounced on two opportunities to secure a brace against Siena and could have even had a hat-trick.
Rodrigo Palacio (Genoa): The Argentine seemed to be everywhere on the pitch for the Grifoni, a brilliant and hard-working show at the Marassi, with a couple of assists along the way!
