Stevens: We will give it our best shot against Schalke

The PAOK coach has revealed his pessimism with regards to securing a result at the Veltins Arena but insists his side will not disgrace themselves in Germany

PAOK boss Huub Stevens has insisted his team will give it their all in a bid to upset the odds against former club Schalke in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The 59-year-old is set to return to the Veltins Arena for the first time since being dismissed by the club last December following a poor run of form for the Gelsenkirchen club.

The Greek outfit owe their place in the preliminary stages to Metalist Kharkiv, who were expelled due to match-fixing claims and, although the Dutchman believes his team face an insurmountable task to secure a result, Stevens is confident they will give a good account of themselves.

He told reporters: "Of course I am happy to come back to play against Schalke as an opponent because I have got to see a lot of friends and colleagues again.

"But I have to say very clearly that we really are underdogs. We did not think it was possible to be here in the first place.

"We cannot pay €8 million for a player like Schalke can. We do not have those resources. We have a totally different budget than them.

"But we are here and we'll give it our best shot."

Stevens & Co. welcome their German counterparts to Greece for the second leg on August 27.
