Hakan: Sneijder & Drogba will succeed at Galatasaray
The retired striker warned fans not to expect too much immediately from the January signings, and insisted Wednesday's European opponents should not be underestimated
Galatasaray legend Hakan Sukur believes Wesley Sneijder and Didier Drogba are going to be huge successes for the Turkish club.
The Dutch midfielder joined from Inter midway through the January transfer window, and just a day before it was revealed the Cote d’Ivoire striker would be joining on an 18-month deal, too.
Hakan, who has now retired from professional football and stepped into the world of politics, has no doubt as to the duo’s potential at the Turkish giants, though, he did insist for fans to tone down short-term expectations of Sneijder in particular.
"Drogba is a top player," he told DHA. "If he and I were in the same team during my playing years, I don't think we could've play together. We have the same up-front style.
"But I believe both Drogba and Sneijder will make a great impact and bring Galatasaray success.
"On the other hand, Sneijder still needs time as he hasn’t played for a while and is just regaining match fitness.
"Long story short, they’re both real good transfers and hopefully Galatasaray will do great, I wish them the best of luck."
Fatih Terim’s side face Schalke in the last 16 of the Champions League, and Hakan believes the Group H runners-up are in good form but insisted the Bundesliga club - who finished above Arsenal in Group B - should not be underestimated.
The former Inter and Blackburn Rovers striker added: "Although Galatasaray are in a great shape lately, they should remember, the opponents are a German team, who happen to be known for their great discipline."
