Jurgen Klopp's side have won widespread acclaim for their quick style of football over the last couple of years, and the Romanian icon does not believe they play like most German teams.
"We have played well against German clubs in the past," he was quoted as saying by the official Uefa website.
"We won away against Stuttgart and Schalke in the Uefa Cup and defeated Werder Bremen in the final [in 2009]. but Dortmund are not a typical German side.
"Their style takes a lot from Spanish football because they like to control possession. Dortmund won the last two German tiles and finished top of their Champions League group in the autumn.
"That means that they have at least two top-class players in every position, and let's not forget how important motivation and attitude are on this stage."
BVB and Shakhtar are due to kick off at 20:45CET on Wednesday.
