Girard: I want Montpellier fans to give Arsenal players hell

The title-winning coach is dreaming of European glory, and has stressed that his side will have to work hard in order to get back on track after their difficult start to the season
Rene Girard is hopeful that Montpellier can spring a surprise in the Champions League, as the Ligue 1 champions prepare for their opening game at home against Arsenal, while urging the fans to create a partisan atmosphere on Tuesday.

MHSC have been struggling to find their best form in the opening stages of the 2012-13 campaign, and their head coach has stressed that they will have to work hard in order to turn things around.

"We caused a surprise by winning the title and perhaps we can create another surprise by winning the Champions League," Girard said at a press conference.

"I hope that the Montpellier fans will give the Arsenal players hell. They can pull us through the difficult times.

"Many people are wondering how many goals we're going to concede, but events on the pitch will tell. We have to be aware of the difficulties we have had, but it's not by crying but by working that we'll get out of trouble.

"Many of the players haven't been in this competition before. It's a way for the club and the players to grow. It's very intense and amazing to be among the 32 best teams in the continent in this tournament."

Tuesday's encounter in France is scheduled to kick off at 20:45CET.
