The Brazilian midfielder missed out through suspension, but believes the side that beat Bayern Munich on their own turf will go down in local folklore and deserve to be respected
Chelsea’s Ramires believes the players involved in winning the historic Champions League will take their places as legends in the club’s history.
Chelsea managed to keep Bayern at bay until the 83rd minute when Thomas Muller netted, but powerful striker Diddier Drogba scored a thumping header to send the game into extra-time. Bayern’s Arjen Robben then had a spot-kick saved by Petr Cech, early on in extra time before Drogba tucked away the winning penalty in the shoot-out to hand his side the trophy.
Roberto Di Matteo and his squad had overcome major adversity to get to the final and were then made huge underdogs, but the west London club prevailed and created history for the Blues.
Ramires, who missed the final through suspension, told ESPN Brazil: “I always said that Chelsea deserved to be respected. We managed to be strong in the Champions League.
“Chelsea deserves respect and today we pulled the strength to turn things around. Now I just need a World Cup to finish my career well.
"We struggled during most of the time during the year, but the season ends in a spectacular fashion. The club demanded this title and I'm sure this put these players in Chelsea's history.”
Another Brazilian, David Luiz, who played through the pain barrier with a hamstring injury, was one of the players to score a crucial penalty, despite being out on his feet.
The defender added: “I did nothing for a month but recovering to come here and play 120 minutes. And I scored a penalty! I can't move my legs right now, but it was totally worth it.
"During one of the breaks, I looked at the bench and they looked back at me. They knew that I wasn't feeling well, but I stayed in the field and managed to play.”
