Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain had admitted that the team are delighted to have reached their objective of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League after last night’s 2-2 draw with Milan at the San Siro.
The Argentine striker opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time after converting a through ball from colleague Angel di Maria, but Madrid still required a 94th-minute equaliser from Pedro Leon to grab a share of the spoils.
Higuain’s effort was los Blancos’ 700th goal in the European Cup, but speaking to journalists afterwards, he was simply pleased that the side had managed to seal their progression to the next round.
He said: “We have achieved our main objective, to reach the next round. We would’ve liked to have confirmed our passage as group leaders, but we have yet to play two more games and we will work very hard to achieve this.
“We are now very motivated to face Atletico Madrid [in La Liga]. We have managed to remain undefeated after such an important game and we want to keep this streak up.”
Real Madrid have collected 10 points from their four matches so far in the Champions League this season, and a point from their remaining two games will see them progress as group winners.
