Salzburg Coach Huub Stevens Disappointed With Champions League Exit, But Proud Of Team
The Dutch coach also lamented his team's difficult position entering today's match.
By Clark Whitney
"In truth, it is irrelevant whether we played well or not," the Dutch coach told reporters. "The fact is that we have not made it."
"It's just more difficult to overcome a deficit when you're behind."
Salzburg were against the ropes heading into tonight's match, having lost last week's home leg by a 3-2 margin. They went ahead tonight late in the first half, but were unable to score a necessary second goal, and conceded a late equalizer.
Stevens also lamented the lack of refereeing intervention after Gonzalo Zarate was felled in the penalty area: "There was also a clear penalty that was not granted to us."
Still, the coach was satisfied with the way his team played.
"But I still need to compliment my team," he said. "They have implemented everything we have discussed."
"Unfortunately, it did not work."
Having crashed out of the Champions League, Salzburg will now have to participate in the Europa League.
