thumbnail Hello,

The Nerazzurri deservedly progress as Chelsea fail to produce on the big night. Goal.com rates the players on show...

CHELSEA

Turnbull: 6.5 – Barely troubled by the Italians in the first half, despite them mounting a number of attacks. It was a different story in the second half, and he made vital saves from Milito and Eto’o, but could do nothing about the expertly-taken winner.

Ivanovic: 6 – Employed almost as a third centre-half as Inter sought most of their width down Zhirkov’s flank, but was caught out of position a couple of times as Chelsea became more stretched in the second period.

Alex: 5.5 – Couldn’t get near Inter’s three-man attack at times, and was too easily turned on a number of occasions.

Terry: 5 – A second poor game against Inter from the former England skipper. He was bailed out by Zhirkov on a number of occasions as Inter turned up the heat in the second half.

Zhirkov: 6.5 – Caught hopelessly out of position on a number of occasions in the first half as Maicon marauded forward, but in the second he was regularly Chelsea’s saviour as Inter created numerous opportunities.

Ballack: 5 – Didn’t get close to Inter’s midfield, and went completely missing during a poor second half for the Blues.

Mikel: 5.5 – Never got close to Wesley Sneijder, which eventually proved his side’s undoing as the Dutchman took the game away from the home side.

Lampard: 5.5 – Didn’t have even half of the influence on the game that he would have looked to exert, and was unable to help his side get a foothold in the second period.

Anelka: 5 – Got forward ok in the first half, but regularly chose the wrong option when he got into a good passing position.

Malouda: 6 – Chelsea’s best player in the first half, he was the Blues’ most potent threat, and was only denied by a goal by an outstanding challenge by Walter Samuel.

Drogba: 5 – A poor game and a poor attitude led to him having just the kind of impact Inter would have relished beforehand. Had a few pot shots from free kicks, and almost created a goal for Lampard, but it was a night he’d want to forget even before he was sent off.

Subs:

Kalou: 6 – Brought on for the final 15 minutes, but had little chance to shine.

J Cole: NA

INTER

Julio Cesar: 6 – Made one superb stop from Anelka, but Chelsea will be disappointed by the scarcity of saves that the Brazilian was forced to make.

Maicon: 8 – Got forward more in the first 10 minutes than he did in the entire first leg. His impact was less obvious going forward after that, but he was excellent in defence, and his magnificent display on English soil will again spark stories of a potential summer move.

Lucio: 7 – The Brazilian master was again superb, providing several vital blocks as the Nerazzurri were stretched regularly by the Blues during the first hour of the game.

Samuel: 7.5 – Made one outstanding block from Anelka’s first half chance and was generally solid throughout as he and Lucio gave Drogba very little to work with.

Zanetti: 7.5 – A true captain’s performance – yet again – from Zanetti. Diligent and magnificent at the same time, he proved yet again that he is the heartbeat of this Inter side.

Cambiasso: 7 – His industry and work rate was on a par with some of his better Serie A performances this season, and he even had a hand in some of Inter’s best attacks.

Thiago Motta: 6.5 – An improved performance from the midfielder, but he should have done better with a headed chance shortly before Eto’o’s winner and his involvement in Drogba’s sending-off may be questioned by some.

Sneijder: 9 – An absolute masterclass from the near faultless Dutchman. His crosses and free kicks were a danger all night, and he created three glorious chances with neat first-time flicks to his attacking colleagues. He also delivered the moment of the night with a magnificent left foot ball for Eto’o to send the Nerazzurri through.

Eto’o: 7 – Looked to have left his shooting boots at home once again when he hesitated on two glorious opportunities, but kept his cool to finish brilliantly and send Inter into the last eight.

Milito: 6.5 – His movement was a constant headache for Chelsea’s static centre-half pairing, but he had one or two great chances that you’d normally expect him to capitalize upon.

Pandev: 6.5 – Found some success dropping off the Chelsea backline to find space behind Mikel, whilst also breaking well on the ball, and was unlucky to be denied by Zhirkov when clean through and attempting to clear the ball from under his feet.

Subs:

Stankovic: NA – Little time to impress.

Mariga: NA – Late replacement for Sneijder.

Materazzi: NA
