Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to his team's second half display after the Red Devils knocked AC Milan out of the Champions League at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils swept to a 4-0 win courtesy of goals by Darren Fletcher, Ji-sung Park and a Wayne Rooney brace to record a 7-2 aggregate win.
Speaking to ITV Sport after the game, Ferguson insisted the English champions’ second goal, scored within a minute of the second half, had ended the game as a contest.
“[It was a] marvellous second half performance,” explained the United boss.
“I think we got the break with the early goal in the second half and honestly that really affected Milan and after that we played very, very well.
“When we play with that tempo we are very difficult to play against. [It was] a very solid Manchester United performance.”
In-form striker Wayne Rooney was again the hero for the Red Devils, opening the scoring before adding the crucial second goal, and Sir Alex was quick to praise the England international and admitted he could surpass Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 42-goals in one season for the club.
“Well that’s the challenge,” added Sir Alex.
“I was happy when he got to the 30-mark to be honest with you. He just keeps improving and tonight again he was sensational.”
Having safely negotiated their way into the last eight of the competition, Ferguson also insisted that he didn’t mind who Manchester United were drawn to play in the quarterfinals, adding: “With that kind of team, it doesn’t matter who we play.”
