FC Zurich Star Johan Vonlanthen Rejects Retirement Claims
Vonlanthen has firmly stamped on rumours that his religious beliefs have changed his footballing plans...
Having aided FC Zurich to four points in the Champions League, rumours have been rife that Swiss international Johan Vonlanthen was ready to quit football due to his religious beliefs, but the player has moved quickly to rubbish such suggestions.
At 23-years-old, Vonlanthen has played over 40 times for his country and has just enjoyed his first taste of football at the very elite level.
Via a statement on FCZ’s official website, he explained, “I want to distance myself completely from all the rumours and speculation, which started last night and are now widespread in the media. I was not at any time thinking about retiring. So I deny the allegations that I have converted to the Jewish faith.
“I look forward to the second half [of the season] with FC Zurich. We want to come back together on the road to success. Moreover, the Swiss national team and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa remain my big goal.
“I respect every opinion, every faith and every religion.”
Zurich, Swiss champions last term, have endured a tepid campaign this time around, lit up by a memorable 1-0 success against Milan at San Siro. FCZ are currently seventh in the Swiss top flight and are a colossal 18 points behind leaders Young Boys.
