Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola praised the "tremendous effort" of his team after they defeated Dynamo Kiev 2-1 to progress to the knockout stages of this season's UEFA Champions League.

Goals from Xavi and Lionel Messi secured the victory as the Blaugrana fought from a goal down to claim all three points at the Valeriy Lobanovskiy stadium in Kiev to ensure Barca finish top of Group F.

"We reacted well and after the Dynamo goal they barely got past midfield. We have been patient in our movement and have controlled the game," he told a press conference afterwards.

"I congratulate all the players because they have made a tremendous effort. The group has been a terrible one and we had to overcome many things. The last team in the group [Kiev], for example, has taken five points."

Guardiola also expressed his satisfaction at topping the group, which presents the advantage of playing the second leg of the next round at home.

"Last year we played the quarter and semi-final second legs away and won, but clearly there is an advantage [being at home]," he remarked.
