Olympique de Marseille talisman Mamadou Niang will miss around six weeks of action after picking up an injury during his side’s 3-1 Champions League defeat by Real Madrid on Tuesday evening, club head coach Didier Deschamps has confirmed.

Niang, who has unquestionably been OM’s top performer in the opening months of the season, was injured when he was fouled by Merengues goalkeeper Iker Casillas as the pair chased to reach a loose ball at the edge of the box. The Senegalese star fell awkwardly on his shoulder, which was sprained, and will be on the sidelines until 2010.

Lucho Gonzalez’s miss from the resultant penalty rubbed salt into the wounds. The Argentine's effort cracked the face of the crossbar and bounced to safety, when a successful effort would have levelled the tie at 2-2.

“I’ve lost Mamadou for several long weeks,” Deschamps lamented to Football365 after the fixture.

The 30-year-old forward has been les Phoceens’ most productive player in Ligue 1 play, scoring seven times and laying on another two strikes for team-mates. Amongst the games he appears set to miss is the big match against reigning champions Girondins de Bordeaux on January 16.

Defeat on Tuesday evening saw Marseille eliminated from the Champions League and pushed down into the Europa League. Had they claimed all three points, OM would have progressed due to Milan's draw against FC Zurich.
