Didier Deschamps: Marseille Could Have Taken Something Against Real Madrid
Deschamps has described OM's elimination as "a kind of sporting logic", indicating his belief that they deserved to finish third in their pool...
Les Phoceens missed the chance to pounce on Milan’s slip-up in Zurich by sliding to a 3-1 defeat to los Merengues. Cristiano Ronaldo’s early free kick had the Spanish outfit ahead but Lucho Gonzalez soon levelled. Raul Albiol restored the visitors’ advantage before Lucho missed a decisive penalty kick. Rubbing salt into the open wound was Ronaldo, who scored his second of the evening in the closing stages.
“They had more technical mastery than us, with attackers at a very high level, but we knew that,” Deschamps pondered to his club’s official website in the immediate aftermath of the fixture. “We had the opportunity to come back to 2-2 with the penalty, and it would have been different thereafter, but we failed. And to miss it was a blow on the head.
“I knew there was a difference between Real and OM, but now I am more aware of that, even if we could have taken something from this game.
“It was initially expected that Real would win the group as they are programmed to go far, although I don’t know if they will.
“We may have regrets, but finishing third was what we deserved and it is a form of sporting logic.”
Marseille will enter the Europa League next spring and will have the opportunity to focus on Ligue 1 before then. Les Phoceens currently lie seventh in Le Championnat, six points behind leaders Girondins de Bordeaux but boasting a game in hand.
