Marseille Midfielder Fabrice Abriel: Champions League Qualification Is ‘Not Impossible’
Abriel believes that OM will go to San Siro and pick up three points, thereby reigniting their challenge in Europe's most prestigious club competition...
Les Phoceens travel to face the Rossoneri on Wednesday evening, knowing that defeat will likely leave them eliminated. Even if they were to win, a positive result would probably be required against the Galacticos of Real Madrid in a fortnight.
“Nothing is impossible,” the creative midfielder bullishly told the club’s official website, drawing confidence from the 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain last Friday. “To win would be a good option, knowing that we can beat Real at home. The key is to show the same face and self-sacrifice [as we did against PSG]. Effort will inevitably be rewarded because we have the quality that goes with it. We will not pass through this event.”
Even the fact that Milan seem to be improving on a regular basis does not seem to be a source of worry for the Reunion-born 30-year-old.
“This may be better for us,” he mused, recalling Milan’s 2-1 success at Stade Velodrome earlier this term. “In the first leg, they felt vulnerable and they said ‘Why not?’ We saw that they were effective.
“Today, we know they will be careful all the time. There may be overconfidence. But we have more certainty - we have the ambition to do something there.
“We know where we go and we know we will get a result. It will be easier.”
Pinpointing Clarence Seedorf as the Diavoli’s most dangerous player, Abriel, who has been a major provider of goals for OM this term with his accurate set-plays, believes that such situations could be key for Didier Deschamps’ side on Wednesday night.
“To unblock a match, there is nothing better than a deadball,” he smiled.
Leonardo’s side will qualify should they claim maximum points.
