Yoann Gourcuff headed the opening goal for Girondins de Bordeaux as they secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League by defeating Bayern Munich 2-0 in Germany on Tuesday evening, but he believes there was an element of luck about their triumph.

The creative midfielder’s goal, combined with a late strike from Marouane Chamakh, maintained Bordeaux’s position atop Group A, with only Juventus standing between them and locking in first place.

Bayern enjoyed much of the ball at the Allianz Arena but rarely threatened to break the French champions’ lines, a fact that pleased the former Milan man.

“We had a good team-bloc, with little space between the lines. So it’s not very tiring and the opponents cannot play,” he explained to Canal+ after the game.

“We were balanced and our central defence was very strong in the air.

“When we scored our first goal, it was a bit of a hold-up because it was out first opportunity. Then we managed the game well at 1-0.

“I am happy for Marouane [Chamakh] because he worked hard and scored a magnificent goal. We are very pleased for this victory, for the club and for the fans.”

Juve are up next for the Aquitaine outfit, who have won all of their last 15 competitive fixtures at the Stade Chaban-Delmas, a record they are doubtless in the market to maintain.
