MANCHESTER UNITED
Van der Sar - 6 - Guilt free from his night’s work unlike the defence in front of him. Was out-done by the footwork of Krasic and was lucky he stayed on his feet as he dodged his giant arms.
Neville - 6 - Pedestrian from the United captain. Rarely looked to get forward and added no stability to a rearguard that lost all semblance of normality. Came up with the assist for Scholes’ goal.
Evans - 4 - Impressive in his United career so far, this was easily the worst performance to date from the Ulsterman. He was beaten easily by Dzagoev for the opener and never recovered from that moment.
Brown - 5 - The better half of a centre-back pairing that struggled. Stood tall against Necid, but didn’t share his experience and left Evans to his own devices too often.
Fabio - 4 - It was all a little too much for the Brazilian tonight. His miniature size stood him in no stead to confront the giant Berezutsky at the back post.
Valencia - 6 - Had speed and skill but seemed too scared to use it. Was fortunate to see his shot deflect past the helpless Akinfeev, but such a moment could be just what he needs to succeed in his new surroundings.
Fletcher - 5 - Looked a pale shadow of the figure that dragged United through the early weeks of the campaign. Lost his man for Krasic’s goal and failed to make any mark on the game. Was incorrectly booked for diving.
Scholes - 7 - Defied the odds by nodding the ball in to the back of the net for his goal. Was decent otherwise as he attempted to kick United in to life.
Nani - 4 - Wasteful and woeful in equal measures again. His United career seems to hang by a looser thread with each passing game. Failed to make it past the hour mark once more as he was substituted for Rooney.
Macheda - 7 - Showed some promising flicks and expanded awareness of his team mates’ positions. Produced a stunning save from Akinfeev at the close of the first half and hit the post with a strong shot.
Owen - 7 - Took his goal in typically clinical fashion and a great leap created a chance on the rebound for Rooney. Is building a strong case for more first team starts.
Substitutes
Rooney - 6 - Should have put United back in the picture with more than 10 minutes to go but was denied by the impressive Akinfeev.
Evra - 7 - Bombed up and down his touchline in trademark fashion as United pushed to get on level terms.
Obertan - 7 - Must be close to usurping Nani in the pecking order after an assured cameo display.
CSKA MOSCOW
Akinfeev - 8 - Pivotal to CSKA’s resistance. Dived at the feet of any United attackers and scrambled across his goal to make a number of saves. Is more than capable of performing against the best opposition Europe has to offer.
Alexei Berezutsky - 6 - No nonsense as usual from the other half of CSKA’s siblings. Was powerless to stop a rampant United at the end.
Vasili Berezutsky - 7 - Popped up with a rare goal and tried to stand tall against wave after wave of the host’s attacks.
Ignashevich - 6 - The big man at the back was suitably imposing against Owen and Macheda, but couldn’t halt the Premier League champions.
Shchennikov - 7 - Was a constant thorn in the side of Valencia until the Ecuadorian found space to strike the equaliser.
Krasic - 8 - Took his goal with aplomb as he danced through the United rearguard, making a fool of Van der Sar in the process. Was dangerous throughout and handed Fabio a lesson.
Semberas - 6 - Stood toe-to-toe with his glamorous opponents, but faded in the face of the United fight back.
Aldonin - 7 - Stuck his foot in a number of times as he gained the upper hand on Scholes and Fletcher in the first half.
Mamaev - 7 - CSKA’s case for victory started to fade when he was brought off. Was a bright spark during his time in the game and was a threat from out wide.
Necid - 7 - Provided the platform for CSKA’s attacks to be built on. Fought with Brown and out-foxed the impetuous Evans in an impressive 90 minutes.
Dzagoev - 8 - Stole the headlines with a thunderbolt of a strike that left Van der Sar stranded. O’Shea shackled him in Russia but he ran rampant at Old Trafford tonight. Came up with an assist for Berezutsky.

Rahimic – 5 – Brought on to steady the ship, but CSKA conceded two goals after he was introduced.

All this focus on the Arsenal and Milan game should not take away from another cracker earlier tonight between Zenit and Benfica. The Russians came from a goal down to lead 2-1 in the closing minutes before Oscar Cardozo levelled things for Benfica, but it wasn't over there as Roman Shirokov won the game for Zenit in the 88th minute.

Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny bemoaned his side's luck tonight but refused to give up. Here's some of his quotes:
"They were the better team on the night and that's the story of the day.
"We have to keep fighting, pick ourselves up, get the confidence back and challenge in the other competitions and in the second leg of this tie too.
"They punished us on every occasion; they scored some quality goals and they deserved to win."

Another Milan player who was willing to share his thoughts after the match was Mark van Bommel, who has urged caution ahead of the second leg in London.
“The score made it look like it was an easy game, but it certainly wasn't.
(Strange... it looked pretty easy from where I was sitting, but hey.)
“I do not think it's over yet. I remember a clash between Milan and Deportivo la Coruna when Milan was also ahead by four goals, and in the end Deportivo eliminated Milan.
“I went into the Arsenal dressing room after the match to speak to Robin van Persie. I had agreed with him to swap shirts – my sons are big fans of his and he brought two for them. They will be delighted.
Van Bommel went on to talk about a possible move to PSV in the future, but was quick to point out his terms for the move.
“I've spoken with PSV, but we don't have an agreement yet. The club has to decide what they want.
“If Louis van Gaal turns out to be the new coach, I won't go.”

Next up is the Milan maestro Clarence Seedorf. He only managed 12 minutes on the pitch, but watching from the sidelines he was delighted at how his team mates had dominated the game.
