Barcelona Defender Eric Abidal's Elbow Injury Not Serious; Fit For Champions League Clash
The left-sided defender's injury is not as serious as first thought...
Full-back Eric Abidal is expected to be fit for Barcelona's Champions League clash with Rubin Kazan in midweek, despite suffering a severe blow to the arm during Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Osasuna on Saturday evening.
The Frenchman played the entire match in Pamplona, where a late Gerard Pique own goal handed the home side a share of the spoils after Seydou Keita had given the Blaugrana a 72nd minute advantage.
However, he had to play out the closing stages of the game in discomfort as he clutched to his arm after he had been involved in a collision earlier in the contest, and he immediately travelled to hospital to have the injury assessed by doctors.
Fortunately for the defender and for coach Pep Guardiola, the initial prognosis of a fractured elbow was ruled out and as a result, the 30-year old is unlikely to be absent for the trip to Russia, a match that has become a must win encounter for the Catalan giants following Rubins’s surprise 2-1 win at the Camp Nou a fortnight ago.
Abidal has battled for a first-team berth this season with new addition Maxwell, who arrived from Italian side Inter during the close season.
