Olympique de Marseille kept their Champions League hopes alive by defeating FC Zurich on Wednesday evening, but head coach Didier Deschamps was not entirely pleased with the manner in which they claimed the three valuable points.

Les Phoceens managed only a solitary goal on the night, Gabriel Heinze steering a right footed shot into the net in the second half, leaving ‘DD’ to ponder a performance that he felt was a little below par.

“I have not seen a great game,” he told the AFP news agency. “There was a lot of waste. Perhaps it was due to our opponents, who put a lot of physical pressure on us and played with intensity. We struggled to play our game. It's good sometimes to win by suffering, but we can do better.”

Looking at the long-term picture, Deschamps was not pleased by Milan’s victory in the Bernabeu against Real Madrid, but he preferred just to consider the next fixture.

“Milan's victory in Madrid is not necessarily a good thing,” he said. “But before we can have hope of qualifying for the second phase, which will require a result in Milan, we will have to beat Zurich in two weeks.”

Group C is somewhat congested, with Milan and Real occupying the two qualifying slots on six points and Marseille and Zurich three points back.
